진정으로 중요한 것

Sing praise to the Lord, you saints of His, and give thanks at the remembrance
of His holy name. - Psalm 30:4

"주의 성도들아 여호와를 찬송하며 그 거룩한 이름에 감사할지어다" - 시편 30:4

As a deadly tornado ripped through Will County, Illinois, a young father sat
cradling his infant child, born just 3 weeks before. When the fierce, howling
winds finally subsided and calm had returned, the man's house was gone-and
so was his baby. But according to the news report, the father found his child in
a field near his house-alive and well! And so was the rest of his family.

When asked by a reporter if he was angry that he had lost everything he
owned, he replied, "No, I just thank God I have my baby and my family. Some
people don't have that. Nothing else is important."

Often it takes times of tragedy to remind us what really matters in life. When
things are going well, we can easily get preoccupied with what we own. We
become tied to so many nonessential, unimportant things. We tend to grow
overly concerned about cars, houses, furniture, appliances, clothes, and
countless other trappings of modern life. But when life is reduced to the
essentials, as it was in the Illinois tornado, we recall again that life itself is
enough reason to praise God.

무서운 회오리바람이 일리노이의 윌 지방을 강타하던 그 시간에 한 젊은 아버지가 3

주일 된 그의 갓난 아기를 어르면서 앉아 있었습니다. 거칠고 요란한 광풍이 지나가

고 마침내 정적이 찾아온 후에는 그의 집도 날아가 없어졌고 아이도 사라졌습니다. 그

러나 뉴스보도에 의하면 그 아버지가 집 근처 들판에서 아기를 찾아냈다고 합니다. 그

것도 온전하게 살아있는 상태로 말입니다. 또한 그의 다른 가족들도 온전하게 살아 있

었습니다.

그는 모든 소유를 잃어버린 사실에 화가 나지 않느냐는 기자의 질문에 “아니오. 아이

와 가족을 무사하게 지켜주신 하나님께 감사할 뿐입니다. 다른 사람들은 가족을 잃었

습니다. 가족 외에 다른 것은 중요치 않습니다”라고 대답했습니다.


우리 삶에서 무엇이 진정으로 중요한가를 상기시키는데 종종 비극적인 사건이 필요

할 때가 있습니다. 우리는 모든 것이 잘 되어 갈 때에 우리가 소유한 것들에 쉽게 마음

을 뺏기게 됩니다. 우리는 꼭 필요하지도 않고 중요하지도 않은 것들에 너무도 많이

얽매이게 됩니다. 자동차, 집, 가구, 가전제품, 옷, 그리고 헤아릴 수 없이 많은 현대생

활의 부속물들에 지나친 관심을 기울이는 경향이 있습니다. 그러나 일리노이의 그 회

오리바람 사건처럼 삶에 기본적인 것만이 남게 될 때에 삶 그 자체가 하나님께 찬양

을 드릴 충분한 이유가 된다는 것을 다시 한번 상기하게 됩니다.


당신은 오늘 당신의 생명이 있음에 대하여, 또 그 생명을 함께 나누라고 하나님이 당

신에게 주신 사람들에 대하여 시간을 내어 하나님께 찬양을 드렸습니까? 이것이 진정

으로 중요한 것입니다.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for Your love for me.

Thank You also for family and friends.

And thank You for the gift of life itself.

Help me live each day for You.
